Isn't is special....

that when I'm/we're getting dumped on, pissed on, shit on,

run over, disregarded, maligned, discarded, stepped on,

betrayed, ostracized, bullied, and so forth...

there's not a single worry or concern, no flag raised from

any quarter or corner by 'upstanding,' 'moral' citizenry that

cares so deeply for the welfare of their fellow man.

But, when I get fed up and become as tough and hardened

as the assholes who are out to destroy me, all of a sudden

my use of the same methods they used to denigrate and offend are

inappropriate, off-limits, distasteful, unacceptable, and cruel?

Thus, the insidiousness of having a second-class division (even

if only in the mentally-recessed minds of those who believe in

a separation between 'them' and 'us') is made crystal clear.

When there's indoctrination as to the idea of lessened worth of certain

others, the actions of discrimination don't take anyone by surprise.

And the need to ignore their double-standards and learn to

defend ourselves from them at all costs is underscored with

great prejudice.

Stand Up

Speak Out.

Demand Your Share.

And to Hell with those who want to shame and bully you into

'proper' actions. "Sitting back and taking it" is no longer on the

menu.

I don't know what leader they think they're following,

feeling justified in attempting to make our lives

harder, but I'll tell you it really is--

Pay A Lot of Attention to the Men Behind the Curtain

Just to dispense with a pretense that may be held by newly out or
younger people who find themselves pursuing a place in the 'gay
community;' There really is not such a beast in existence.

Sure, there are a couple thousand devoted, hard-working, insightful
folks of all races, age, beliefs who represent all the rainbow of queer
and are looking out for equality for everyone. And then there are
several million noxious, self-serving, addicted, bar-hopping body nazis
who are as shallow as the day is long. The latter's objectives include
being catty and getting their dicks sucked.

I'm aware of the horror stories of growing up gay that produce such
people, but there are times when you have to deal with bottom lines,
and everybody has a sob-story, sister!

Just like in the 'real world,' there are good and bad aspects in everyone,
and frankly because of the damage we suffer in life, our group has more
than its fair share of damaged goods, and not a lot in place to make sure
that those basic needs are being addressed.

There's a lot of division, a lot of factionalism, a lot of marginalization.
A lot of lacking promotion of safe sex, of emotionally-healthy sex, of
mutual respect. The emphasis is on fun and abandon and consumerism
and a market, rather than community-building, shared interests, and
coalition-building. Politics and social reform are an after-thought to many.


The Transport Group Theatre Company does the classic "Boys in the Band"

Pretending it's a perfect party, for the presentation to the outside world,
may seem like a unified show of support, but it keeps the necessary changes
and developments from taking place. Criticism allows for transformation.

And casting the spell of one big happy family just sets the new guys up
for a fall. And let's face it; the new guys' best interests are not at the heart
of most of the selfish agendas I see.

London's Favourite Gay Pride Parade Video

I love this parade video because it represents more of what I remember
'pride' being about back in the day; a vast array of differentness being
celebrated under the banner of togetherness and similarity.

Granted, London is one of the more diverse and larger gay scenes in the
world, but rather than using that as an excuse to say "Well of course
you'll find diversity--and celebration of such--there," what if we looked
to the inclusiveness of this parade as a foundation, or a template, for how
things can work if we try?

this homey homo wet-dream-date fulfills the desires of most of us gay
dorks who think we could never get 'the hot guy.' (Or 'the guy we crushed
on as a kid.' Or 'a real cop.' And so on...)

meeting great folks and getting great opportunities, it's truly been
rewarding.


But I thought I would share some nuggets of info for those who are
thinking about getting into the activist game.

DO know where you stand on the issues and stand firm.


DON'T just follow other activists blindly, they can and will be wrong
at times.


DO research all causes, laws and lawmakers.


DON'T accept anyone's word, without proof of truth.


DO realize that your views may not be popular.


DON'T kiss ass to be popular. Many activists try anything to get the
attention of the JoeMyGods out there. Just be yourself and stand firm
with your beliefs.


DO know the gay rights fight is long and tedious.


DON'T think our civil rights can be completed in a presidential term.


DO know the political game.


DON'T be naive about politics.


DO know how to be strategic.


DON'T go all in without plan B & C.


DO know who and what you're fighting.


DON'T fight everyone and every battle.


DO have an open mind.


DON'T suffer from tunnel vision and group think.


DO remember it's about our community.


DON'T make it all about you.
